The term 'dementia' is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.
Good quality care that preserves dignity, treats people with respect and promotes independence can improve the lives of care home residents with dementia.
Saturn, in conjuction with Intercall is able to offer various solutions to assist the staff when involved in this type of environment.
i) Full Dementia Controller (Profile 18)
Two general control modes are available, the first controls any egress from the bedroom to stop a resident wandering, and the second controlling movement within the room, whilst also providing light guidance.
After settling the person into bed, the carer can select either or both modes depending on the needs of the resident. If at any time the movements do not conform to the individual's pre-programmed normal behaviour pattern, an alarm is automatically raised to alert the staff.
Any movement from the bed is detected by the bed pressure mat, which starts a timer and automatically turns on a guidance light(s) generally positioned above/within the en-suite. The timer can be set between 0.5 sec and 30 mins in minute intervals.
Should the resident not return to the bed before the time exceeds the specified period, a alert call is then made on the NurseCall. This alert is cancelled should the person return to the bed putting the system back to monitoring mode and the light switches off.
If any egress is made from the room, an immediate alert is made via the NurseCall.
ii) Dementia Controller (Profile 1 - 17)
Funtionality is similar to profile 18 with the exception that an additional light is positioned within the ensuite and the systems monitors time spend in there. Again alerts are made if the time exceeds the pre-set periods.
With the added functionality, it is slightly more expensive than profile 18.
iii) PIR / Door Contact
Where cost is an issue, movement monitoring needn't be.
For resident movement we can position a simple passive Infra-red (PIR) unit either under the bed or opposite, which links into the existing room call unit. Any movement will trigger the call system immediately.
Alternatively a door contact can be sited on the door to control any egress. Both are controlled by the activation device located outside the room.
It's simplicity in itself.
